Let’s talk about morals and choices. Every moral stance has an opposition. That means that no matter who you are, what you believe, or how you live, you could be the antagonist in someone else’s story. This is not always a bad thing. That person simply has opposing views, so it is no statement of one’s personal character but highlights the opposition that exists.
I’m enemy to some because I insist on living in harmony with the earth instead of dominating it. Well, that just means there are people who wish to dominate the earth instead of living in harmony with it, right? I’ve learned not to take this personal and instead redirect back to the issue- is it in our best interest to find harmony or to continue on this path of human supremacy?
I believe living in harmony means doing no harm unnecessarily and paying attention to natural cycles and riding them like you would a wave in the ocean. This means loving all life as you would love yourself because we are all interconnected and a part of each other.
I am not a Christian but I have studied and I believe this is the base philosophy of Jesus’ teachings, also. The story of the Good Samaritan is one of the most misused parables: When Jesus was asked, “who is my neighbor?” he told a story of a man who was dying on the side of the road while several “high holy figures” passed him by because they had better things to do. A Samaritan man (a “despised outsider”) saw him and brought him home and cared for him. Which of these men acted as a neighbor?
It’s hard to believe that Jesus was an enemy to the state. Today is “Good Friday” and many people recognize it as the day he was crucified by the state. I hope we can all take a moment today to consider our moral stances and their opposition. Does hate/fear dominate your morality? If so, peel back the layers by asking yourself why is it a fear? What do I really want for this world? What is best for all life on earth? No worries about the opposition. Keep peeling until you find that which you want and not what you fear. Now: move forward in that direction.
